fond memories of the antique elevator in the library at my undergrad:
honestly kinda unfortunate that the only spooky library aesthetic is the victorian fancy bookshelves dark academia one bcos like. ok here's some library stories.
while i was at the university the library was undergoing a major refurbishment so for a little while the print journals were being stored temporarily down in the basement.
basically nobody ever consulted the print journals bcos 99% of stuff undergrads would be looking up is online these days so every time i went down there it was dead fucking silent & empty. you had to walk through what felt like several miles of empty basement to reach the collection, which was in a room w a photocopier shoved in the corner and a bunch of these:
u turn the handles to move these around (saves space) and every time you had to go and check the aisles first on the offchance that someone was in there so they wouldn't get u know. Compacted.
many years ago i did a week's work experience with the National Library of Scotland. here it is:
but that's just the tip of the iceberg. it keeps going down the side of the bridge, like so:
i got a tour of the stacks while i was there. it's floor after floor of this:
the bookshelves are made of metal & i was treated to the 'fun fact' that the shelves are, bizarrely, load bearing. for this reason they have to be constantly vigilant about fire hazards because even a relatively small fire could cause a bookcase to buckle from the heat, which in turn could cause the whole building to collapse in on itself like a house of cards.
this has haunted me ever since!! thank you.

Speculating on the city: the digital urbanscapes of Cao Fei and Yang Yongliang Monday, March 24, 2014 4:45 p.m. Welles Brown Room
The Art and Art History Department invites you to a talk by Elizabeth Parke entitled, "Speculating on the city: the digital urbanscapes of Cao Fei (曹斐) and Yang Yongliang (楊泳梁)." The event will be held on Monday, March 24, 2014 from 4:45-6:45pm at Welles Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library.
The talk takes the multiple meanings of speculate as a starting point—as a verb: to watch, examine, see; and as a noun: the act of buying and selling land or commodities to profit from a rise or fall in value. Parke will discuss digital works by the artists Cao Fei and Yang Yongliang through the two meanings of speculation to reconsider both the economic and visual approaches to the contemporary Chinese city. Cao and Yang use digital tools such as Second Life and After Effects to give viewers god-like vantage points from which to speculate. Hovering over Cao’s dystopic RMB City and surveying in detail Yang’s megalopolises cloaked in mushroom clouds we can begin to discern a satirical and critical perspective on China’s urban boom.
Elizabeth Parke is a scholar of contemporary Chinese Visual Culture and is scheduled to defend her dissertation, “Infrastructures of Critique: Beijing 1978-2010” in the East Asian Studies Department at the University of Toronto this Spring. For the past few years, Parke has been part of a multi-institutional team that is compiling a large-scale digital archive of Chinese magazines in the early Chinese Republic. She is using new media technologies in new and innovative ways in both her teaching and research.
Please join us and share with students and colleagues. Thank you!

FIRST SEMESTER OF COLLEGE: DONE! by Fernanda Sesto
I came to the University of Rochester on August 19th. Today is December 16th and I’m done with my first semester. WHAT? HOW? I never thought four months could pass so quickly, but they did. And I am so grateful for being here.
It is fresh on my memories the day I came. I was extremely exhausted from the three flights I had, but as soon as I saw the iconic Rush Rhees Library my enthusiasm peaked. I was here. After waiting so long, I made it to my dream school.
I am not going to lie, it was incredibly hard to leave my country. I left my family, my friends, an awesome job, and community projects I was involved in. However, those were the tradeoffs I had to make in order to come here. And now I know I made the right choice.
When I arrived to the airport, I met a few International Student Mentors who were waiting for students in order to take them to campus. I was already feeling the Meliora vibes. Their warm welcome made me feel like I was not alone anymore. Then, as soon as we got to the River Campus and I saw all the Resident Advisors, D’Lions, and First-Year Fellows cheering on all the new students, I knew this was going to be a great experience.
I remember the first thing I noticed was that all these people receiving us were students. I was surprised to see how independent and student-managed the activities were and how vibrant the community was. And, this was just the start.
Orientation week was awesome. Even though we had some formal events we had to attend, we did have some other fun activities where I had the opportunity to meet classmates and make some friends. Coming from such a small country as Uruguay, imagine how amazed I was when meeting people from Nepal, Hong Kong, Tunisia, Puerto Rico, and many more. The diversity that exists at the University of Rochester is like nothing I have experienced before and that makes every day so much fun.
Classes started by August 28th. I decided to take five classes this first semester; Principles of Economics, Introduction to Computer Science, Discrete Mathematics, Beginner Contemporary Dance Technique, and the Raising Leader Class.
Today, as the last day of the semester, I can say that I’m definitely an improved version of myself because of these courses. They challenged me in so many different ways from exploring my movement patterns in the dance class to questioning my political views regarding free-markets in the economics class. Thanks to the format of the classes, I was able to further develop my analytical and reflection skills and have a more critical thinking.
However, the experience I learned most from was engaging in group discussions, collaborating in projects, and participating in student organizations. By getting to know more students, I was able to hear amazing stories of different community projects they started, businesses they created, and ideas they have. I learned several ways of managing my time, studying techniques, and having leadership styles BECAUSE of my exchange with the community here. Both students and faculty. The drive for personal development that exists here is inspiring.
But, people at the University of Rochester do not only care about their personal development. They want you to shine with them. They will help you. If you are struggling, they will friendly send you the notes and explain a concept to you. They will give you advice. They will listen to your problems and try to come up with a solution together. If you have an idea, you will definitely find collaborators around because students at U of R are driven by passions. They are full of them. And being in such an environment is one of the best things that has happened in my life so far.
Throughout the semester, I had ups and downs. It is not all roses. I felt homesick. I felt exhausted. I felt anxious. Nonetheless, being surrounded and supported by this kind of environment where people are constantly pushing themselves to be better and encouraging you to do so inspired me to continue trying. It’s all about trial and error. We are here to learn and learning is a process. Yes, we do care about our goals, but we also care about the process.
These months I had moments in which I was the learner and others in which I was the teacher. I wasn’t even aware of the skills I had gained during my gap year, but by engaging in different activities on campus I realized I can help others to reach their goals. Because of this, I am now much more aware of my weakness and strengths and I can use them to continue making a positive impact in the community.
I know this was such a long post, but it is difficult to summarize all the learnings I take from this first semester. But if you want one, I would say surround yourself with people that want their light as well as their want yours. People who will get happy if you are successful. And lastly, people who are passionate because those are the ones who are changing the world.
Spanish:
Me sentí agotada. Me sentí ansiosa.

Looking back on my 15 Assignments list, I did not realize that I needed a day and night photo go Rush Rhees to complete the task so here it is....I just find the library an aesthetic sight and adore its intricacy and details, plus I think the Meliora letters in front complemented it well.

Prospective U of R student
This piece is inspired by prospective U of R students who all lined up to take their cliche picture of themselves touching the top of Rush Rhees with only their fingertips. The high school seniors were humored by the apparent size/scale manipulation, as was I. The goal of this project became to capture images that played with scale. Naturally, the focal points became the library and prospect student.
The photos are taken both inside and outside of the library to illustrate the exploration processes of college. This prospective college student is exploring the library (her potential home for the next four years). Her exploration through the library parallels that of the college search and selection. The best way to select a college is to observe and experience it first hand. The featured student is taking it upon herself to see for herself what her college has to offer. She is exploring her new surroundings, as do the prospective students who come to the U of R.
In order to increase the accuracy of the size manipulations, each image was first photographed with a digital camera. Then, adjustments were made if necessary to get the desired photo. The digital copies of the photos served as a rough outline for the position and adjustments needed, etc. for each particular photo. It was very easy and quick to take digital photos and look them over to assess for any needed changes whereas with the film cameras, you can not see the end result until the photos have been developed, at which point it is too late to make any desired changes. The digital camera was also used as a guide to play with the different settings to adjust the lens with respect to the lighting and zoom. The digital camera made taking these black and white photos a lot easier and more doable and closest to the accuracy I was looking for. Not all of the photos were taken and saved, therefore the digital pictures posted are not digital parallels of the black and white developed photos. I was less concerned about the quality and actual photographing of the digital photos, and more about the developed photos. The digital camera was a very useful tool, and just that, for the end result of this project.

University of Rochester
Sitting at the editor's desk before the fourth-hour bell, I sip my dark roast in peace. There is chaos to come. The staff arrives, and we're off: 49 minutes to interview and write, in the thick of layout week.
It's our newsroom. It's invigorating. It's where I've come thus far.
My future is political journalism, informing and empowering the electorate. It's what needs to be done. Each month, my team and I stand by this goal. Our stories on interdistrict busing, Islamophobia, and LGBTQ+ rights have attracted thousands of views and many comments. We start conversations.
As a writer, I am in a unique position where my voice, my opinions, and truths, help others understand the world better. It's a solemn task, never to be taken lightly.
The University of Rochester will enable me to go further.
I'll double major in political science and language, media and communication, using the core track system to diversify my political palette.
To satiate my desire to do, I'll join the Campus Times: home to 14 editors and four columnists, a platform to continue starting conversations.
Most of all, I will be inspired by Rochester's character. There's a mix of tradition and purpose here. It's Meliora. It's the Rush Rhees Library, where Athena and countless owls encourage enlightenment. It's the cluster system. It's the clock tower. It's the acorns on George Eastman's hat.
So soon, it will be me, one of 11,300 self-motivated, determined Yellowjackets are becoming ever better.

SA245:Write about the exhibition at the Art & Music Library
For the exhibition at the Art&Music Library, I selected my second project ‘SE7EN’ to present, because my first project is to personal, I don’t want to show such personal work in public. And I also want to rework my second project, because it is interesting theme. I want to appeal more people to notice seven sins, and encourage people to confront these sins, and flight back the guilty and shame when they experience these sins.
My exhibition in art the Art&Music Library is totally different with my original installation in Level B of Rush Rhees Library. My original installation contains a game, so it needs enough space. But there has limited space in Art&Music Library, I have to consider how to instal my art work in limited space and how to cooperate with other pieces. I want to instal my piece in a corner and near to floor. Because ‘seven sins’ are in people’s deeper heart, it is a incisive and deeper topic, people rarely talk about them and notice them, but these definitely influence people a lot. Thus I want to instal my piece in a quite and secret space, and to create a quite feeling for audiences, so a quite corner is my best selection. Finally, I instal my piece as an order of seven in the wall, it is an implication of theme. I felt that it is a successful exhibitions. From this exhibition, I learn about that exhibition of art work can be different form, sometimes artists exhibit their work in an exhibition as totally different way with their original idea. Exhibition is integrated process, artist need to consider a lot of parts, such as location, the size of space, light, and audience’s preference. This exhibition definitely gives me valuable experience in this semester.
